As Charlie Babbitt, a charismatic but slightly selfish car salesman, returns to Cincinnati following the death of his estranged father, he's met with an unexpected surprise. In his father's will, he learns that the majority of his inheritance has been left to Raymond, a mentally challenged individual who is institutionalized at a mental hospital. Charlie is stunned and feels betrayed by this development. Determined to get his hands on the substantial inheritance, Charlie decides to visit Raymond and convince him to come home with him. Upon meeting Raymond, he's struck by the autistic savant's exceptional abilities, including an uncanny memory and mathematical skills.
